Baptisms (sometimes called 'christenings') are very special occasions when we welcome new members of the church family. It is for parents who want to bring up their children within the Christian faith and adults who come to faith. Because it is about joining the Christian family all our baptisms take place during one of our main Sunday morning services. Either the Morning Worship service on the first Sunday of the month or our Family Service on the third Sunday.
It is important that parents think carefully about baptism carefully and so we have a folder that is given to parents to look through at their convenience and a DVD to watch and discuss together.
At the service parents, godparents and any adults being baptised make the following responses:
Do you turn to Christ?
I turn to Christ.
Do you repent of your sins?
I repent of my sins.
Do you renounce evil?
I renounce evil.
All godparents must have themselves have been baptised and ideally should have been confirmed as well. However if someone has not been baptised but would be happy to be baptised at the same service as the child for who they are taking responsibility then they can be a godparent.
Please contact the Rector about baptisms, and it is essential to do so before setting a date for the baptism.
